Al Gore made a movie about it. Art Garfunkel is to give concerts to support it. Governments base their election platforms on it. The conservation of the environment is a hot topic! This goes for the graphic arts production, as well. Is aware of the need for environmentally sound behavior and is constantly looking for opportunities to promote and support environmentally friendly practices.
Together with its suppliers, output of Graphic Arts (printing) adapting commercial practices to conserve resources and reduce the overall impact on the environment. These initiatives are only part visible to the consumer, much less that consumers are they have a choice when they become customers who are printing needs!
The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on Initiatives green "can be taken by the Department of Graphic Arts Production. These initiatives have a huge impact on preserving the environment and the most of them without compromising the quality of the print job.
Based inks, vegetable oil
Offset inks are a mixture pigments, resins, mineral oils and other ingredients such as drying agents. Especially in uncoated papers these inks can be replaced by agriculture known inks. These inks are used by the largest printing companies and work very well.
In Canada, the top four Calgary printers began using canola oil in inks to replace vegetable oils soybeans. Canola oils used are Canadian crops. The environment always benefits if we use products locally grown, because there is less transport involved the harvest to consumer.
Varnishes
A lot of people like the glossy cover in your favorite magazine and high-level brochure they receive when asking (product) information. Very often brilliant effect is due to covering the printed paper with a layer of varnish. In addition to the protective effects of varnish against scratches and stains which gives a luxurious feel to the product.
A varnish normal contains drying oil, resin and oil. The evaporation of oil in the air is bad and this kind of printed products more difficult to disappear recycle.
There is an ecological alternative to the paints used. This is a better water-based varnish recyclable aqueous calls. Due to longer drying (the water evaporates more slowly than thinner) this coating requires special unit in the press. Printers increasingly investing in new presses water with this unit.
Recycling
It is common for most printers to sell their waste paper recycling companies, that in turn this work into paste and added to the creation of new fibers of paper with recycled content. Depending on the quality of the pulp is also used for production 100% recycled paper (high end).
If you compare a third recycled paper we use everyday (printer paper) with the recycled version will be surprised by reducing the environmental impact (in all areas of the process). Other things that can be recycled, for example: offset plates, developing fluids and packaging materials as skids, cardboard and plastics.
The printers in the real environment conscious use of the * EPA licensed disposal companies disposal of hazardous waste. They also use cloths that are clean and can be used again and again instead of materials disposable.
FSC
Be FSC "Forest Stewardship Council. This Council was created in 1993 and is the first independent world labeling scheme for forest products, integrating role. The organization promotes: sustainable management "environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically of the world's forests "
All printers can use FSC certified papers. This does not mean they can offer FSC certified products. A printer has to be part of the string "Custody FSC" to use the FSC logo and therefore should be certified by the FSC. Once certified a printer, will be tested by agents of the FSC on a regular basis to see if your process and its administration should follow the standards set for certification.
The production process total should be controlled to avoid contamination with other papers. Only then will the final product is allowed to carry the FSC logo and registration number.
Advice
Printers also guide their clients to design and work in environmentally conscious products as possible. They do this through counseling optimal size (also profitable!) And provide advice on the use of materials.
Some printers even give information customers about the purposes of elections environment of friendship that have been made.
Your choice
You can be sure of one thing: Being the environment will cost the printer a lot of extra effort and increase all the printing costs of the plant. This can lead to higher commodity prices compared to firms that choose to go to the easy, no environmentally friendly way.
As a consumer, it is important to understand which is in charge of graphic arts production with respect to policies that work towards a greener environment, less poisoned. Later, you as the consumer have the same choice! Is your full color project will be cheaper or greener?
