Frederiksberg, Denmark witnessed the birth of furniture designer Finn Juhl on January 20, 1912. The son of a textile wholesaler, Finn Juhl enjoyed the Royal Museum of Fine Arts and was found there quite frequently. I wanted to be an art historian, but practical thinking his father pushed him to attend the Royal Academy of Arts instead. Often considered a very quiet man, Finn Juhl earned a degree as an architect who later used in interior design as those found in cameras UN in New York. His furniture designs, especially their chairmen, is what is truly to remember and secured their place in the modern design.
Finn Juhl worked in the offices of the architect Vilhelm Laritza for 11 years, learning what was to become an architect and give the necessary expertise in the afternoon road. Won an award for designing his own home in 1942 while working for Laritza, Finn Juhl had the opportunity to also work with Viggo Boesen on Radio the Danish Broadcasting Corporation's Building. Finn Juhl not credited for the design of this building, but all aspects of design – especially the interior – was even greater in the building, leaving your mark on him forever. Company Laritza left to open his account in 1945, turning his attention to interior design and furniture. He had been exhibiting his own designs before leaving the firm of architects, including one in connection with cabinetmaker Niels Vodder shown in the 11th Annual Association of Copenhagen woodwork.
Organic seems like Finn Juhl and feels and this style was a pioneer in the 1930s. His furniture was designed using various structural elements that showed the tensions and the forces acting on the furniture in a dramatic light. His trademark was the showcasing of the differences between the frame of the part and the areas that supports the body. The concept a person floating on the surface of the seat has been developed by Finn Juhl and considered one of his many great inventions in furniture design. He also enjoyed so wood could be carved and many of his works – such as the chair of the 'Pelican' – were inspired by ethnographic primitive mystique, the Surrealism, and the passion to create products that are unique and functional.
Finn Juhl Designs eventually turned to appeal to the mass market was beautiful, classic, rugged and affordable. Many of these pieces were produced by Niels Vodder who worked with Finn Juhl, 22 years after their initial collaboration. Finn Juhl furniture won 16 races different guilds. He became well known in the United States and began lecturing on interior design in the Frederiksberg Technical School. He and his products were presented in the magazine 'Interior' and took part in 1951 'Good Design Show', in Chicago, USA.
Finn Juhl passed away in 1989, but his memory is still very evident in the Danish furniture market. He has been recognized by the success of country exports, and had no problem pushing the boundaries of the Danish design community during his life's work.
